Tank Encounter in the Sandstorm

The battle subsides with the desert storm....air cover is grounded. Some metal refugees separated from their comrades search through the sandstorm for some landmark......

Momentarily glimpsing a village oasis through the gloom, a troop of 2-pounder Valentines drive in to investigate...........

........... It appears deserted.

Somewhere out in the desert..........

Image

a troop of 37mm-armed Honeys, as lost as the others, trundles closer.

Suddenly the Valentines are not alone.......and before they hear the explosive crump, 37mm shells are whizzing in.......

Image

That's a Panzer III F, an SdKfz 222 and a Panzer III E emerging from the storm behind a low dune. You can see the bog either side of the path. But a Panzer III 'G' on the German's right realises he's sighted and is sending in 50mm shells........

The Commonwealth forces are outgunned: they need to respond and close the range. And fast. The next decisions are crucial......Germans have the advantage but unknown to them, they're outnumbered. The British look at the soft sand that could bog them down, and worry the Germans could pick them all off if they get stuck. So instead, the British commmander takes a chance the German commander's in the armoured car, and aims long range at the SdKfz. It takes a hit.

Bulls-eye!

The German armoured car is hit and the explosion turns it over. The loss of their commander momentarily paralyses the German response......
But that decision may have cost the Valentine crews dear as they stick where they are, behind a shallow dune, and start to take incoming too...

Image

But what's this....out of the dusty fog..........

Honeys appear behind the Germans at just effective range. They've only seconds to close the range - ''Now Maitland, now's your time!''..........

but, instead the Honeys stop and try long range shelling....... Nooo...they have to close in.....the Allies have just a few seconds to close.......

Image

Seeing the Commonwealth tank crew's irresolution, the Germans gain heart: they devolve command and fire. First they take out one Valantine, then another and then...........calmly, turn to face the Honeys.

.......and ah! Another squad of Panzers arrive.

Er.......Tricky.
