SYW Campaign Weekend

Post by Pz. Ferdinand » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:24 pm

We played a stylised campaign on 3/4 Jan representing the European theatre. There were four tables set up representing East Prussia, Silesia, Saxony and Westphalia. The Allies had to win a battle to be allowed a crack at the prize- Brandenburg/Berlin. The first two photos are of Berlin- the glittering prize coveted by the Allies. The building at the top is Charlottenburg Palace- one of two specific objectives of the Allied Armies. Each game was to last for half a day to give us three or four rounds over the whole weekend. If neither player on the one table wished to concede defeat, they could battle on for another round to achieve success (or failure). If an army won, it would be reinforced to its original strength whereas a losing army would only receive half of its losses back. However, the overall commander in chief of both sides could re-allocate forces between rounds across tables to compensate for such attrition.

The top photo is of the Silesia table. This was a clash between the Prussian Royal Army under Frederick himself and the main Austrian army under Daun. This turned into a monster game lasting three rounds with reinforcements arriving from other theatres at the end of each round.
I`ll tell you the outcome when the Day 2 photos are posted.
The other table shown is Saxony, which was set up back-to-back with Silesia, where the Reichsarmee attacked Prince Henry`s army at Dresden. The Prussians disdained awaiting the Romans behind defensive works and came out to attack. Unfortunately for them, there were, on this occasion, just a few too many Royal and Imperial troops to handle, causing the Prussians to register their first defeat of the campaign.
The bottom photo shows the Hungarian Regt Josef Esterhazy awaiting an opportune moment to weigh in and lend support to the Imperial troops.

Top shows the deployed left wing of the Austrian army in Silesia.
Centre is another view of Prince Henry`s force in Saxony.
Bottom is Westphalia. This was the last table to be set up and by then I had exhausted my supply of green cloths, so a winter battle was in order. This scenario included a number of features drawn from this theatre- British infantry advancing bravely in line a la Minden, a windmill (also a feature at Minden- plus this was a Christmas present and so had to be included in any event), and the Erbprinz leading a Kreffield like attack over a canal and into the French left/rear.

The Erbprinz directs his men over the bridge with great urgency- the French must be hit before they can re-organise! Freytag`s Chasseurs lead followed by the Hessian Garde Grenadiers and Brunswick Regts Imhoff and Zastrow while Luckners Hussars await their turn. Meanwhile, the French hurry up a brigade of infantry and one of cavalry to stop them.

This is the East Prussia table. The battle is loosely based on Zorndorf. The Russians deploy in a box like formation with flanks protected by watercourses. Wedel`s Prussians attack!
In round 1 the Prussians score an easy victory. This causes Frederick to under-estimate his Russian opponents and leads him to stripping Wedel`s army of regiments to help fuel the on-going fight in Silesia. Consequently, in Round 2 the Russians defeat Wedel and open up the way to Berlin!

Photos from Day 2 of the campaign.

After defeating the Prussians in East Prussia, the Russians were reinforced by an Austrian contingent and marched on Berlin! Their threatening battle line can be seen stretching across the horizon. The Prussians dug deep into their resources to throw every available unit against the invaders.

Meanwhile in Saxony............
The successful Reichsarmee after obtaining a victory in Round 1 moved against Berlin. However, their strength was insufficient to deal with Prince Henry`s army once reinforced by the Potsdam Guards and several other units. Consequently they were beaten back to Saxony for Round 3 where now it was their turn to defend Dresden. As it happened, they did this very well and once again scored a victory over the Prussians.

Top- Prussian battery defending an increasingly hopeless position in Silesia. After a day and a half of battling it out, Frederick was compelled to concede the field to Marshal Daun. This resulted in very heavy and ill-afforded losses to the Prussian army.
Centre and Bottom- The French in Westphalia lost their Round 1 battle, resulting in some losses to their army. This enabled re-allocation of the Hessian Garde Grenadiers to Prince Henry`s army now defending Berlin from the Reichsarmee. Round 2 ended with both Ferdinand and Soubise wishing to continue. However, Soubise `s interests were sub-ordinated to the greater good in that a 2 battalion brigade of infantry was withdrawn and despatched to the Reichsarmee to enable that force`s Austrian component to be transferred to Silesia where it made a crucial contribution to Frederick`s defeat. The weakened French force was no match for Fredinand`s confident British, Hanoverians and Brunswickers who scored a notable victory in Round 3, causing further weakening of Soubise`s force.

Top- Regts Imhoff and Zastrow confidently advance against demoralised French infantry after shattering a charge by French cavalry.
Centre and Bottom- Meanwhile, back at Berlin, Frederick picks at his lunch and speaks with his commanders in the gardens of Charlottenburg whilst the Austro-Russian hordes draw near. This Round 3 battle for Berlin was the bloodiest fight of the campaign with neither side prepared to concede defeat. Charlottenburg itself was nearly taken by a battalion of Russian Pandours who were only fought off at the last minute in the actual grounds by a freshly arrived and still mounted detachment of Dragoon Regt No.6.

Do you often play sideways Down Under? (Magnetic figure bases and a metal table, I guess.)

And I wish I could have joined you, and not just because of the most recent cold and snowfall here, but because I've got a WRG-mounted, Minifigs Prussian army too. (Well, sort of WRG mounted--I've got the line infantry bases with the proper per figure frontage but cut into three-figure bases for use with Age of Reason rules that use four stands times three figures per unit.)

As mine are old'uns too, there's almost no shading on them. I was thinking about trying the "wash" or "dip" method on them to see if it would "shadow" them up with a minimum of effort on my part. But I've been too much of a slack dog to get around to it.

The campaign statistics- the Anglo-Prussians including the defences of Berlin/Potsdam totalled 674 figures in 32 battalions and 35 squadrons with 31 guns. The Allies totalled 790 figures in 44 battalions and 42 squadrons with 34 guns.

Anglo/Prussian losses were, at the end of Round 3, 90 figures and 2 guns which led to the removal of 6 squadrons from the Army Lists. The Allies lost 144 figures and 2 guns leading to the loss of 10 squadrons and 1 battalion.

We had eight players for the first day of play and 4 or 5 for the second (ie 5 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon). We didn`t get to Round 4 on the Sunday, but three interesting scenarios remain to play out, which we might do as 'normal' games over the next couple of months. Of these, the critical scenario will be the Allies` third and last attempt on Berlin. For this engagement, 290 Allied Figures will take on 210 Prussian. The former will have 18 Battalions and 17 Squadrons and the Prussians will have 16 Battalions and 15 Squadrons. Many of the Prussian battalions will be the seriously under-manned survivors from Silesia and Saxony.

So, there may be some more photos for posting, yet!

Thanks Hussarbob. I`m sort of stuck in a Minifigs timewarp. I could never replace my existing figures with 28mm figs but I still need to add units to round out existing forces- so I`m still buying and painting Minifigs!
