40k Praetorians & Mordians WIP

Post by Admin Fella » Thu Jan 26, 2017 3:13 pm

While away with work I have started on my 2017 project which is to paint a 40k Praetorian & Mordian army. This has been on my want list for years now and I have finally taken the plunge.

The intention of this thread is to post updates during my work trips and "hopefully" keep me committed to this project now that I have started.

I have done the first 5 Praetorians. I am not a great painter, but hope they will convey a good look when massed and applying the "3ft" rule. I do want to redo the Pith helmets a bit and have also reworked the yellow as well. Basing will be done when I get home.

So over the next 2 weeks I hope to have 1 Praetorian and 1 Mordian squad done along with a couple of heavy weapon teams.

They look good enough that you wouldn't need to apply the "3ft" rule. Very nicely done.

It has been a productive few days. I have finished off the rest of the Praetorian Squad along with 5 Mordians.

I have managed to purchase a few more Praetorians at a reasonable price, so it now looks as if it will be a 3 Squad Mordian Platoon and a 2 Squad Praetorian along with a Heavy Weapons Squad. I have 2 Praetorian Command Squads now, which 1 will go for the Praetorian Platoon, but not sure if I will use the others for the Mordians.

Again nothing too flash, but I am pretty happy with how they have come out. Quite a bit darker in tone than GW's painted versions, but I like the slightly darker shades it seems to fit better.

I will slow down for a few days now and maybe make the officer my next piece. I have 2 weeks left on this trip to do him and 2 heacy weapon teams. Will see how I go. :)

Next up is the officer and Heavy Weapon Team.

I decided to have the heavy weapons similar to their Victoria Era inspiration and put them into "Artillery" colours. So full blue uniform with red trim.

Next 5 Mordians are finished.

So for this trip I have completed 2 squads in total along with an officer and Heavy Weapon team. I am pretty happy with that. In the past I have been terribly fickle with completing projects, but given that I have pretty much spent this years hobby $$ on this collection, I best do my best to finish as much as I can. :)

I just have the 2 figure crew for another heavy weapon team to do and that will be it for this trip. Next trip I hope to get at least 1 more squad done along with several heavy weapon sets.

Lovely work! I'm sure these will stand out on the table.

BTW - Some of these wet my VSF apetite

Figures are old Games Workshop Imperial Guard for 40k. Praetorians have obvious Victorian inspiration. :)
