Mustering the Confederates.

Post by Midshipman Easy » Sat Jan 21, 2017 12:07 pm

So with the Union brigade done it is now time to turn to the Rebels. Usually I paint unit by unit but to give the Rebs that rag-tag look I thought it would be easier to do them all at once. So...

Image

73 Rebs. 3 regiments with officers and brigade surgeon. There are two other regiments to come, one as Wheat's Tiger Zouaves, and the other a mish-mash of figures making a convereged Zouave battalion. Ok so no such thing existed but I hope it will look great on the table.

Anyway, the officers.

Image

Using the airbrush the figures were pre-shaded using Panzer Grey.

Image
Image

The officers uniforms will be a single colour but the troops will be more mixed so I started with their pants. A light spray of the base colour to blend in the pre-shading. Then a 50-50 mix with white to give base highlights and then 75% white on the very highlights to coplete the pants.

2 shades of blue, 3 of brown, and 4 of grey were all used.

For the next stage they were taken off the paddle-pop sticks, mixed up into different groups and given hoola skirts of blu-tack to protect them from overspray from doing the jackets.

Image

Only using 2 greys and 2 browns for this step.

Now with bases, blankets and muskets done.

Blankets get a basic highlight at this stage and some will get simple patterns later. Muskets are about the only thing that will use the same colours for all the figures.

Try to find the same figures to photgraph each time but with 73 of them on the desk at the same time ...

I am using 2 colours from the Valejo Air range. "Mud Brown" and "German Camo Brown". Solid base coat of selected colour going easy on the undersides that have been preshaded. Then 50% mix of the same colour with white and then again with 75% white concentrating more on the upper surfaces with each pass as a kind of general high light. In Canberra at the moment so cant pick out photos to show the difference.

Thank for the reply - I really must look over the different Valejo paint ranges. Never thought of looking in the range.

Ok side by side comparison. The paint pot below them is the colour used on that figure.

I am not as happy with the darker colour but I think it is ok as "Butternut" covered a bit of a range. I am avoiding that combination in the future.

Problem with doing it in bulk like this is that there are no 5 minute jobs.

Yes there are no pupils yet because my ink/varnish mixture makes the ink from the draftsman pens I use run. So that will be the step after followed by some Dullcote.

I also have a 0.005 one as well.

Sometimes my aim is good, sometimes less so. You only really notice up very close.

The next batch; 48 Confedrate Zouaves.

Image

For those in the know you can probably tell that one regiment will be Wheat's Tiger Zouaves (the guys in blue stripy pants which had me humming "Bananas in Pajamas" the whole time) the other will be a more mixed bag.
