1st Roman Unit WIP

Post by Admin Fella » Sat Sep 15, 2012 1:54 pm

Here is some pics of my first Roman unit i am trying to complete. 1st Corps Early Imperial.

I am hoping by posting here it will spur me on to finish them.

I have 4 test figures basically finished, I think i got the colours right? I now intend to try and paint one colour through the unit minimum each sitting, I just did all the chain.

I am basing 120 x 60 with the intention of 18 per unit, would that seem suitable? I have also tried to arrange with throwing pilum to front, preparing/throwing in 2nd rank and advancing in 3rd.

Anyway suggestions welcome as I am very new to this, in particular for the Command elements, I am not sure about colour options with them.

Not playing ancients myself (despite owning some Romans and Celts) I can't really suggest anything in relation to the based.

Great looking minis though :D

Thanks. :)

I have 2 units of 12 archers done, which just need basing and I am looking at 2 units of 18 Legion and 3 units of 18 Axillary.

I do need some advice on colours/reference pics for the command figures though??

Some more WIP pics:

I painted all basic colours on the legionaries. I have then split the group into 2 for detailing, with command to be done separately.

6 with just basic colours done.

Here are 5 with basics colours done, washed and metal, armour and skin highlighted.

I have started the command, but i am still unsure of colours for the bearskins and leather skirts etc.

There's so little actual records and information regarding the correct colours of things for this period, you can paint em whatever you like. Anyone who says stuff like " Centurion belts were only ever red leather ".......are having themselves on. However there's a good chance they weren't THIS orTHISorTHIS
Any "earthy" tones are safe IMHO for Romans Mathew. Looking good btw. :D

What do you mean no this bally 'ell! They are coming along nicely Matt I had a commission from a reasonably knowledgeable bloke a while back and he stipulated various natural leather tones for clothing strapping and such and preferred red leather mostly for scabbards. They looked ok to me though I'm no expert.
