FOW V3 Re-Booted!

Post by Ken1967 » Sat Jun 16, 2018 9:06 pm

A few of us been having a chat and we've taken the step of re-booting V3! Here in Canberra, FOW play as a group has collapsed with the introduction of V4. It's been well over six months since anyone in our group has gathered for an event.

To that end we have the following events in planning starting next week:

24 June @ Jolt Games, Canberra.
- Mini Campaign - Late War. 'Final Assault into Germany'. A short and sharp three-game mini campaign. At this stage around 16 players lined up.
- 1500 points, support options for Generals to ponder and assign.

21-22 July @ Wintercon, Canberra.
- Five games over two days. Traditional tournament with a twist; trophies for top three places. All other prizes through 'Combat Bingo'.
- Registration through CGS: https://www.cgs.asn.au/wintercon/tournaments/
- 1680 points, Late War.

1-2 Dec @ Hall of Heroes, Campbelltown.
- Five games over two days. Similar conditions to Wintercon.

And the big one... Cancon over the Australia Day weekend, 26-28 January 2019!
- Eight games over three days. Era and tournament conditions to be determined.

I don't really know much about FOW, but why has V4 failed? Is this just a group thing or has V4 not been well received across the community?

Mathew

Mathew,

A lot of rules changes that had a significant impact on the game.

I'll go into one example and how it impacted... You're playing a Soviet Rifle Bn. Each company in your battalion has [say] 18 stands - in V3 once you fell below 50% strength you'd role a morale check. In V4 I would have to knock out 16 stands before that occurs. That's a biggie in the minds of many players.

They dumbed the game down - many of the groups I play with enjoyed the more historical approach taken in V3.

Its become a game of Tanks on a larger scale. The cards have introduced special abilities that is verging on magical powers (in my opinion).

All that said, its flourishing in North America, but not much anywhere else. In any event, its not for me and the groups I'm involved with - but for those that want to play it I'm sure they're enjoying it.

At this stage, we've got 16 players for V3 at Wintercon, with still a few to complete their registration.

Thanks Ken for the insight, seems to happen with most "big" tabletop game systems at one stage or another.

Mini campaign on 24 June went well. Nine players - and Allies couldn't get across Phase Line Bag...
