Bridge at Oivi

Post by mluther » Sun Aug 30, 2015 7:16 am

Greetings,
I plan of doing this little action as a Chain of Command game and have no idea what the bridge should look like. The terrain seems relatively flat and the bridge must have been of sufficient size to make the attack worthwhile. I've seen piccies of other Papua bridges that look like some trunks lashed together by vines and thrown across the water.
I would really appreciate any specific info on this battle and wonder if any one down there is playing Chain of Command with SW Pacific forces.
Thanks,
Mark

Looking at the excellent graphic found at http://kokoda.commemoration.gov.au/batt ... gorari.php, I'd say that it to err on the smaller side would not be a mistake. It certainly wasn't as significant as the one over the Kumusi at Wairopi, and that latter one was pretty flimsy by most accepted western conventions.

You've chosen a fantastic battle to replicate. It was not only a highly significant full stop to the Nankai Shitai's highland adventure, but with a mere 3500 Australians pitched against 2800 Japanese, it was arguably the most intimately scaled significant battle of the entire war.

I'll be very interested to see how your visionary project develops.

Hi!

On the Kokoda.commemoration.gov.au site there's a period picture of a bridge between Gona and Soputa so maybe that could be used as a guide, basically a log bridge...

The caption reads 'Members of the Papuan Infantry Battalion rest on a bridge on the road from Gona to Soputa just after the fall of Gona in December 1942.'

That picture is what I was basing my model on.
Thanks, Capt.
