WW2 Australian Snipers - Pacific

Post by Dropbear » Wed Aug 27, 2014 4:48 pm

Were snipers attached 'on loan' to a platoon, or did each section have a digger that was a 'designated sniper'?

I noticed on the Bayonet Strength web site that an Australian WW2 section has 11 men in it, and I was wondering if the 11th man was a sniper, or if a sniper was an asset on loan from a higher source.

Has anyone any information they can share please?

A couple of sources for you:

From http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-asstd/sniper.htm : ' "There are a number of general tasks a sniper team can fill ... to harass the enemy or reconnaissance but if it is doing that it is not being employed properly," W02 King [W02 Steve King, an instructor at the School of Infantry Sniper Cell] explains. Historically, Australia has never trained soldiers to fill the sniping role. Soldiers that were good shots were given special rifles, some scoped, some not, and tasked normally with anti-sniping duties.'

And: you'll find all the three variations of the Australian Army battalion structure employed throughout WW2 at http://www.bayonetstrength.150m.com/Com ... talion.htm , all of which appear to me to be devoid of any specific units of snipers.

Hope this helps.
