Thanks your Mighty Zuluness, but I'm hoping the woadies won't have too many archers - its their damn chariots I'm worried about, and a testudo could well end up as Aventine marmalade!

From Matt's email:
This Saturday the HOH is hosting a Hail Caesar day in store. It is based on the Battle of Watling Street which was a decisive battle where the Roman army finally crushed the uprising in Britain lead by the Fiery Briton Queen Boudicca.

Craig and I have been furiously painting chariots for the game so it should be a lot of fun with a good number of models on the table. So if you can make it down from midday please feel free to join in. Extra models will be welcomed.
So I will be contributing the mighty Cohors I Batavia - that'll make all the difference - at least the baggage will be secure!

No I regret it may all be over by then...I shall have either fallen on my sword or be planning my triumph....

Well combat has been joined, and unjoined, and I have neither been awarded a triumph nor feel the need to fall on my sword...

The Barbarian hordes were late for their appointment with doom - Barbarians Eh! What can you expect?

When they did turn up they were definately unhordlike - on the acutal day we think about 8,000 Romans slaughtered about 30,000 Britons, whereas our chaps were only outnumbered about 2 to 1, hardly a fair fight for Rome's finest...

So to make the game more interesting we narrowed our frontage within the break in the forest to present the Britons with not one, but two open flanks.

They duly fell on these with more chariots than Ben Hur, but didn't manage to coordinate with the mass of PBI, and by dint of our being 'superbly drilled', our less than stellar orders process still enabled us to turn to meet the flanks....

After just managing to withstand the first few onslaughts the odds for the Britons fell off rather, so they pulled of for a few jars...We however did not feel strong enought to counter attack so we called it a draw.

A fun game, Dave my fellow Roman and I certainly had our hearts in our mouths a few times early on, so Gary and Craig must have done a good job of 'barbarianing'...Thanks to Reese for umpiring.

It was also great to catch up with Tartyy and Ralph and mull over a few sprues as one does...A good day out at HoH....

I'm afraid I didn't take any, but there were plenty being taken, which will probably end up on the store's website. I'll post if that happens...

from what I heard the Barbarian Generals problems were that neither of them could see over the rim of their chariots ;)
