ACW Campaign.

Postby Midshipman Easy » Sun Mar 12, 2017 5:24 pm

The Penrith Wargames Society kicked off its ACW campaign on Sunday with some map moves, an opening battle, some more map moves and planning for a major battle next meeting.

The campagin is set in 1862 with the objective to capture the opposing capital. The Union has a larger army but its quality is lower. The map is from and old "Strategy and Tactics" magazine game (which I have seen recently as a reprinted box game). Pins/Flags represent variable sized units as well as "dummys" to confuse the enemy. After each engagement we will have a chance to "recover" losses but there is no construction/reinforcement. The idea is to play out one year and see how we are after that.

Intial deploymentis shown onf the maps below. (For some reason they are coming out sideways. Sorry.)

Turn 1.
The Rebels won the Intiative and quickly advanced North to occupy Alexandria and Winchester. The Army of the Potomic moved up to river but did not engage. The Army of the Ohio advanced East whilst out West the Federals occupied Cairo. These meet with no response from the Rebels.

Turn 2.
Rebels spread around a bit as the Western Federals moved into Columbus and slowed movedacross West Virginia.

In the East the Union commander was unsure what to do so sent forth a single division (No 13) to advance into Alexandria (Rebel No 20). This triggered our first battle ( viewtopic.php?f=76&t=7001 )

Thanks Dropbear. First battle report is now up. ( viewtopic.php?f=76&t=7001 )

Turn 3.
The Commander of the army of the Potomac pulled many of his forces back in order to concentrate them. (No 22)
Image
However he did this to west of Washington allowing Lee and 2 Corps (Nos 20 and 13. No 7 is a cavalry brigade) to advance on the city and attempt to overwealm its small garrison (an infantry division and 2 batterys, No 10) before the Army of the Potomac arrives to reinforce it.

Lee is planning to attack from the East and the South but the garrison will be dug in behind heavy defences. The Battle is here: viewtopic.php?f=76&t=7015

Sorry about some of the earlier images. Photobucket isn't acting as it should.

Turn 5.
HAving given the Blues a good scare, the Rebels scramble back over the Potomac river leaving Alexandria open but moving to block Union forces coming through West Virginia.
Image

Out West the Union continues to move South as the Confedrates move troops by rail to try and block them.

Turns 6 and 7.
The manuvering in Virginia continues.
Image

In Tennesse the Rebels avoid being trapped in Cairo by moving back to Memphis. Union forces take Cairo and march onto Decatur in Alabama, leaving only light piquets behind. Rebel cavalry reoccupy Cairo cutting Union supply but by now and entire corps of blue troops is concentrated outside Decatur determined to take the city by storm despite the Rebels being dug in. If they can take the town the Yanks will have supplies come in from Nashville and a road to Chattanooga.

The resulting battle at Decatur is reported here: viewtopic.php?f=76&t=7026

The Strategic moves on the map followed by battles with figures is always pretty cool well done!
