, music of the martial kind..

For discussion regarding all things to do with our emergence from the Dark Ages to the Seven Years War, FIW, AIW and everything else through the Age of Reason.

, music of the martial kind..

that isn't actually martial music..
as I pootled up to Sydney yesterday I had a tune in my head..Haydns symphony 100 "the Military". i can seriously reccomend it , especially the 2nd movement
http://trumpet.sdsu.edu/m151/Haydn_Mili ... ny100.html
and if you drive really fast you can get from Marulan to Goulburn in the time the 2nd movement plays..
and I though a bit more on the idea..
well there is Handel's sarabande, in all forms now since Kubrik made it so popular..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarabande
and the Frederick's composition The Hohenfriedburg March
http://www.last.fm/music/Frederick+The+Great
indeed the whole Barry Lyndon soundtrack is a bit of a plunge into the SYW, though a bit is actually dedicated martial music
a truly remarkable album..
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072684/soundtrack
and then there is remarkable Chieftans 4
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072684/soundtrack
and frankly you can beat O Neils March, a good rendering by the chieftans with visual..the product of somebody deeply entwined in the Celtic Twilight..here

and then there is Bach, and the Brandenburg concerti..hmm you cant do much betterthan these..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandenburg_concertos
and my final idea is the 2nd movement from Beethovens fifth, actualyl the whole symphony has a martial air to it.. but the second movement in particular..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._5_(Beethoven)
and of course Handel's fireworks and Water musick are stirring pieces..(as is most of Handels stuff for that matter)
try his See, the conquering Hero comes..written for that Hanoverian ratbag William Duke of cumberland
