A book not to read...

Post by craigjwoodfield » Sat Jul 04, 2009 9:12 pm

Whilst on holiday in not-so-sunny Tasmania a couple of weeks back, I picked up Tom Holland's Millennium to read on the flight back. Now I loved Rubicon and Persian Fire, his last two non-fiction works, so I was really looking forward to this account of the years around the end of the first millennium AD.

What a disappointment. Turgid, dull and forgettable. He has definitely tried to do too much - tying the events across the entire Christian world into one narrative - but he also seems to have lost his talent for succinct and entertaining analysis. It shines in places, but definitely was not worth the price.

Cheers

Is this the same author that wrote a novel about London starting with the Celts and ending in WW2?

Can't remember the name of the book or the author :P
